Nestled in central
West Virginia, Sand Fork Elementary School, located in rural
Gilmer County, provides a small school setting for 131
students in grades pre-kindergarten through sixth. Sand Fork
School opened in 1922 as an elementary and high school with
grades kindergarten through 12th grade until
1968, at which time all county high schools consolidated. In
1987, the 7th and 8th grades were
consolidated to form a countywide 7-12 middle/high school.
After a lengthy period of declining enrollment, Sand Fork
has experienced a growth in enrollment for the past three
years and is now the second largest elementary school in
Gilmer County. Along with the growth in enrollment has been a
growth in achievement test scores and a desire for the
school to succeed in all levels.
Sand Fork Elementary
is a place where students and parents alike feel welcome and
the environment enhances learning. The overall climate of
the school is positive. Key factors of success of the school
include teacher commitment, student and parent involvement,
and community support. The small school setting has provided
many opportunities for students to advance in becoming
lifelong learners.
