Sand Fork Elementary Has “Distinguished” Writers
Four students from Sand Fork Elementary received
“Distinguished” on the West Virginia Writing Assessment, which
is administered statewide to fourth grade students each year.
Only 5% of all fourth graders throughout the state received a
score of “Distinguished.” To receive a score of
“Distinguished” a student must write a composition that
demonstrates exceptional performance in fourth grade writing
skills. From a prompt, the student must write a
well-organized composition that maintains a clear focus, has
paragraphing, and has as strong beginning, middle and end.
The writing must also have strong use of examples and
supporting details, complete and varied sentences, vivid or
precise vocabulary, and purposeful use of transition. The
four students from Sand Fork Elementary who scored
“Distinguished” are l-r: Matthew Montgomery, Michaela McRae,
Ciarra Junkins and Lasa Mencer. They are pictured with Sand
Fork Elementary principal Kim Freeland and fourth grade
teacher Julia Duffield who are both very proud of these
students.
