Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) - Societas Verbi Divini (Latin for Society of the Divine Word) - are a religious order of priests and brothers within the Catholic Church. We have worked in West Virginia since 1973.

We work with a beautiful
people in these mountains. We reach out
to them through the Church we love and
serve, a Church we pray will always be
recognized as - "a center of
the Spirit, a place where poetry dares
to speak, where the song reigns unchallenged,
where art flourishes, where nature is
welcome, where little people and little
needs come first, where justice speaks
loudly, where in the wilderness of idolatrous
destruction the great voice of God still
cries out for life." (This

  The Appalachian region runs from Southern New York to Northern Georgia and Alabama. It contains 397 counties in 13 states, parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and all of West Virginia. It is not a simple place. There are rich and poor, big and little, new and old, and lots in between. but somehow, no matter how confusing it seems, it's all tied together by the mountain chain (of Appalachian Mountains), and by the coal in its Center, producing energy within it .
